Name convention

As previously said, do not hesitate to use the layers to structure your layout. When a new layer is created, it will be named Layer 1, Layer 2,…

We recommend you to respect the following naming instructions:

  • Always name explicitly your layers: change the default name Layer 1 and name it for example logo_company or “editable. This way, anyone will instantly know its content.

  • Do not use accented or special characters in your layer names and never insert the symbol < or >.

  • Make a preference for lowercase.

  • Replace spaces with underscores ("_"): for example logo company should be changed in logo_company.

Locked layer

topic b3d2bImage Added

Allowed and/or strongly encouraged practice

In the same way you can hide all the frames on a layer, you can lock all the frames on a layer: by locking the layer which will prevent any move or change on its frames.

A frame placed on a locked layer won’t be editable through the web interface of the platform.
This could be very useful to securise elements (texts or images): your final users won’t be able to change them.

We also recommend to select explicit colors for your layers, for example green for editable layers and red for layers to lock. This way, the color code will remind you not to forget to lock a layer.

Non-printed layers

topic b3d2bImage Added

Allowed and/or strongly encouraged practice

In Adobe InDesign, you can configure a layer as "non printable", from the palette layer options (right click on your layer): this way, all frames on this layer won’t be printed, even if we can show them.

Keep a text wrap

topic 30a8dImage Added

Allowed and/or strongly encouraged practice

When you hide a layer A, one option is called Suppress Text Wrap When Layer is Hidden, which handles the way the frames of the layer A will wrap or not the texts of layers B and C.

topic 9118eImage Added

If you hide the layer A but keep the text wrap pushing the text of the frame placed on the layer B, you may create confusion in the platform. Because, the platform users will only see the layer B with the text pushed without understanding why, as they won’t be able to see the hidden layer which commands the text wrap.

People using the web interface of the platform are not desktop-publishing experts.

If you hide a layer, we recommend not to use this feature:
Keep the box checked Suppress Text Wrap When Layer is Hidden in InDesign.

“Clean” your layers

The documents you are create are supposed to be used several times, for months even years. During the creative process, many layers and many guides are created, more than really needed.

We recommend you to suppress all empty layers using the function Delete unused layers of your palette Layers in Adobe InDesign.
