Wedia File format (.wedia)
wedia File Structure
The .wedia file format is an archive that encapsulates the complete package for an Adobe InDesign document.
It is the preferred way to store Adobe InDesign Packages in the DAM.
Contents of a .wedia File:
The InDesign document in its binary format.
All linked files referenced by the InDesign document.
Fonts used in the InDesign document.
An IDML export of the InDesign document for compatibility purposes.
A WXML description of the InDesign document.
The archive is compressed using a ZIP format and then renamed with the .wedia
extension.
Rationale for the .wedia File Format
The .wedia file format was designed to address several key challenges:
Complete Packaging: Ensures that any document imported into or exported from a Wedia system includes all necessary fonts and links, making it self-contained and ready for use.
Version Independence:
InDesign cannot open documents saved with newer versions of the software.
By including an IDML export, the .wedia format ensures that users can work seamlessly in environments where multiple InDesign versions coexist, both on desktop and server systems.
Exporting .wedia Files from the Desktop
To export a .wedia file from your desktop, ensure you have the Wedia InDesign plugin installed.
Steps to Export:
Open your InDesign document.
Use the Export menu.
Select the Wedia file format as the export option.
If the Wedia file format option is not visible, it is likely that the Wedia InDesign extension has not been properly installed or configured.

If you don’t see the Wedia file options, it is likely because the Wedia InDesign extension has not been properly set up.
